if one buys a 2nd hand bike from a dealers would they have run a hpi check on the vehicle,or is it up tyo the purcaser to do so ? anyone.the reason i'm asking is i have never purchased a 2nd hand bike before,i've always had new,i do not want any nasty surprises.i collect the bike this saturday.

I would imagine that the dealer would conduct a check on the bike before they bought it off the potential seller as they would want to ensure that any finance on it was settled.

Buyer beware.

Some (most) do, but for your own piece of mind it is worth running one yourself for a fiver or so.

I bought my GTR privately and although the seller was about as kosher as could be ( mid rank police officer) I still forked out £10 for the vehicle, finance and insurance check. Piece of mind if nothing else and considering you paying 1000's for your pride and joy what price is that?

If buying from a dealer I would ask to see the HPI check and vehicle check if they've bought the bike in. I even go as far as contacting the previous owner on the log book and asking them a few questions. Go through the paperwork as closely as inspecting the bike. If the dealer is large and has a reputation to lose then he won't mind putting himself out a bit for the sale. It's always "buyer beware" in my opinion.

Remember even big dealers are not averse to selling a "lemon". I treat them all when buying the same as used car dealers - out for what they can get. This was certainly true when looking for the GTR.

Take care now!

Middle ranking police officer? Flippen hek I'd definitely paid out for an Hpi check.  :mfr_lol: Dealers normally do, so just ask them and they'll gladly give you the documentation ( they want to sell a bike). If not, get one done on line for a nominal cost. Peace of mind!

Definitely don't assume that HPI checks have been done. When I bought my daughter's scooter from a  small dealership last week here in London I was handing the money over when I laughingly said, "I guess all the HPI is clear", and the guy said, "Don't know but I can check for you"......
Bloody hell !, it was all clear..... but not sure where I would have stood if the original money lender had come knocking on my door...sue the dealer ?

hi guys, having a hpi check dosent mean the bike is clear of finance/loans!!!!!!,
how many times have you heard on your local radios about what is called "log book loans"??
Basically any vehicle car/bike etc can be put up against a request for money,,,,,because these type of companys are not registered under any strick requirements in the financial sector, this unfortunatly is another "black hole" for criminals and dodgey dealers,,,
i read early part of last yr about a guy who sold a triumph that was bearly 12mths old for aprox £1000 less than what it was worth,,,this was winter time,,,he had bought the bike new and no finance on it,he then had taken out a log book loan for x amount on the bike,,,,gets the dosh an comes up with a good enough reason/excuse to tell the potential buyer when he arrives,,,,the guys did a hpi check, all comes back clear,,,he shows him the original recept clearly showing that the bike was paid for in full!,,,,,,the new buyer proudly rides off with his new bike,,,,,9 mths later he gets a knock on the door late evening,"we come to collect the bike due to you not paying the finance on your loan",,,,,,,,,,,he had to give them the bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,
when purchasing any vehicle, please bear this in mind!!!,you need to write up a letter stating that there is NO finance, loans of any discription on the vehicle you are buying,,,get them to date and sign it,,,you do the same too!!!,,,,,by doing this,,,,,this is YOUR vehicle that you hve bought in good faith, and will remain yours,,,,,this does stand up in a court of law,,,,(apparantly))),
Just pisses you off that there is always some bugger trying to cash in on ya hard earned dosh, and you have to go to these extreams to combat this
