Going to service bike this week, starting with an oil change. Few questions:

  • Best way to remove the filter? Shall I do the old screwdriver trick, or hope that it turns itself
  • How hot does the oil need to be? Can I let the bike idle for 15 mins before removing? Or do I need to take it for a ride first?
  • How not to scald myself when taking the nut off
  • The oil capacity is 4.7l. Do I fill up to 4.7l, ride the bike for a few mins, and then check once settled?
Strange as it sounds, I've not yet done an oil change on the bike. Its all been done by the dealer.
Last oil change I did was on my Ford Cortina MK V in the early 90s

Asif, how about we do this?

When you come over on Saturday, (if that is still the plan), I help you do the oil change.  I've done it a few times on the other bike & it's dead easy.

You'll need 4.4ltrs of whichever oil you prefer and a new crush washer, (usually £1) from a bike shop, plus the new filter. I've bought my crush washer's before from Bradford motorcycles, they always seem to have them in stock but I'll get you one on Friday if you wish as I'm passing them when I go to Keighley to get the pre load shock adjuster exchanged etc.
I've got the right tools for removeing the old filter, torque wrench for the drain bolt and oil recepticle thing for capturing the old oil. You might as well change the final drive oil at the same time, I've plenty left so you dont need to buy any of that. It might be helpful to get a new crush washer for the final drive gear oil drain bolt. I'll pick one of those up too if you wish from the same place.

The plan is still Sat.

I was going to do it tonight. If I don't I will probably take you up on your generous offer. Will let you know tonight.

Asif, no problems.

LW, after you are done with the oil change, a good wash on Asif's bike would give it at least 10 to 15 mph extra speed, more aerodynamic..

Winston Smith

That'd be an expensive service - I recall the last time it was washed - needed a specialist in to do it!

I'm not afraid to ask advice if I'm unsure. Rather do it correctly than crying afterwards!

As LW said, it is easy. Both oils and air filter changed. The only issue I had was removing the oil filter. It was on tight. Eventually borrowed tool from neighbour and it came off. According to the manual you can't hand tighten it. Getting a torque wrench onto it was impossible so I did hand tight and a quarter turn I think. Probably over tightened it.

No, but the instructions on the filter had that on.

And LW is correct, its 4.4l of oil, not 4.7l
