That's an interesting question, and one I pondered myself as young motorcycling numpty, 'How the fuck did these old buggers get to be so fast)... I mean it's not like they're on anything special, FFS! Most of 'em have top boxes!!  :hammer:

This was put to me at the weekend, from one of my motorcycling chums, younger than me, lean and fit and having as much road craft as a 3 year old on his first tricycle..

I'm faster than you .... Because I am.... Because I don't hurry or rush or arrive at every corner at a million miles an hour with my pants on fire.  Each corner is weighed, measured, compared with a life time of hooning round them, and then dealt with accordingly.
You have 3 years on the bike, I have 32. Just because most of them were on rubbish bikes compaired to today's machinery doesn't mean I didn't learn anything.

You ride for ....oh, an hour at a time, I ride sometimes for days. Touring, now that's where you really learn to be fast and efficient, you have somewhere to be and a time in which to get there, and so you develop a rhythm, one where excessive speed and braking are wasteful, you are just quick everywhere.

My mate always used to point at the Tuono and the fact I'm an ex racer as his excuse for being woefully slow on his R1, now when he can't keep up if I'm on the GTR, or as last weekend the VFR, he seems to think that I am in fact Harry Potter and use magic words..... Well I must do as by the time he's out the corner I've gapped him by 100 yards..... Yes I do use magic words 'In slow ...out fast'
Lastly there is the other and most important thing he fails to understand as he farts about trying to hang off and listening to his MP3..... I am a Biker;  :smartass:

I never really got the racing bug, far as I saw it why would I only want to do 15 laps..... I want to ride all day thank you very much. I don't listen to music, although I do have a choice of stations, the bellow of an Italian V Twin, or the howl of a 1400cc across the frame four... all I ever want to do is ride my bike, that's how it is, I go fast because I can, I get my knee on the deck because I can, I loft the front (on the Tuono) because I can. Usually I ride on my own as I see it as a personal pleasure, although it can be shared with the right people.

The flow of a well ridden set of bends is something mystical, that bit in the middle when the braking, and turning in is done and you wait.... Hanging there, time has stopped.... For a moment... and you watch for the vanishing point to move away and then it's time to unleash the noise... That's the bit I live for on every single ride I do, and that's why I'm faster than you.
It's all about Bikes....It always was... and always will be.

 :agree:

Constantly point this out to the 'power rangers' I ride all year, pretty much all weather and have done for 25 years. My Ducati riding mates are always cheesed off because I dont panic when it rains, think nothing of riding 400/500 miles in a day, 'touring' to them is a blast down to Le Mans for Moto Gp or going out for the whole day at a weekend. I'd love a Hypermotard, Tuono or RC8R as well, but can't afford two bikes so the GTR does the job for me, fast, smooth, comfy.....much like its rider :mfr_lol:

Once you realise we are all mad, life starts to make sense

:agree:  Its a very competent machine is the GTR and I dont use it at anything like it's full potential but it suits me the way I ride it, slow and steady. :mfr_lol:

I know that and you know that but lets let Mogster think he's fast eh?  :mfr_lol:  Now where's me zimmer frame?

O.C.

I learnt to ride on Trials bikes, where the idea was to go really slow and stay incontrol

I spose my riding skills kinda developed from that slow, steady and controlled start, into my current biking style which is also slow and steady

i dont proclaim to be fast , so indeed you may win

Mogster

:mfr_lol: I wasn't out to proclaim how fast i maybe, i was trying to make a point that, a lot of us older bikers who toodle about on Touring motorcycles can be deceptivley quick, when matched against some herbert with multi-coloured leathers, simply because the very nature of touring encourages you to have a reasonalbly constant and efficent speed.

I think Mogsters orginal posting is excellent,

Being smooth, consistent and quietly looking for the opportunities is a good way to ride and will more often than not get you from A to B, sometimes via C in a shorter time than some loon on a sports bike.
