Well there you go .. 48 yrs old non smoker and triathlete .... no operations, still have my appendix, tonsils, molars and havn't broken anything... then a few weeks ago whilst running a bit of pain in me nether regions which goes on for a while then over the next few weeks I get a classic bulge right down in my groin ... being a sensible chap I can self diagnose but had to go and see the Dr 2 weeks ago ... referred to the Consultant who after a thorough examination was delighted to tell me that I have a much smaller one on the other side as well ... hernia that is !
Thank goodness for Bupa is all I can say ... bloods and swabs tomorrow for a bit of knife work that was going to be Monday but has now been brought forward to Friday afternoon ... YIKES ! that's only 2 days away !
Hope that he can do it "keyhole" and go in under my belly button but if that's no good its a slice each side and a few stitches ... no training driving or riding the Gtr for 3 weeks or so ... I won't be tempted to go back early, either to work or training as if it goes again then I would only have myself to blame ! Should be out within 24 hrs and then plenty of walking  .... Molly will be well pleased !
I have no worries at all as I know it's all too common ... the only thing that bothers me is this " no eating for 12 hrs before  " !!!!! I shall fade away !!
Anyone else been down this hernia route ?

I assume that being a Triathlete Rusty you are fond of ya ab workouts, usually in fit people this type of thing occurs due to injury. So it might be wise, once back to fitness to have a look at ya training routine and see if you can identify where you may be 'pinging' ya abs.

course it could just be old age  :mfr_lol:

Yes I had a double hernia opp about 8 years ago and it was not key hole. I was back on my bike a Yammie R6 at the time  and did south of France and back in 4 days and this was only 8 weeks after opp......good luck

..... and I thought that this was a bike forum!

I had a small umbilical hernia in 2008. BUPA cover is a great asset to have access to. I was able to choose my surgery day to  let me have my 10 day Alps bike holiday, go back to over see the introduction of a major re-organisation, have a day off to take my 1st rospa test and then have my day in hospital.

Op was on Tuesday and by Friday the next week slung my leg over the cbf1000, but felt it was bit too heave to risk riding. I tried again on Saturday and felt more comfortable and on Sunday went out and did 180 miles!

What I find the most surprising is that Rusty is a tri-athlete?! Surely he means try-to-be-an-athlete?

Just because many do it does not make it right. Just because many think it does not make it true.

A mate just had this done.
Bloody NHS made him lose loads of weight (he weighed 33+ stone) which was a good thing, but even after he'd lost 13 stone they ****ed him around for several months. Finally got done a couple of months ago.

He had a kevlar mesh inserted to prevent it happening again and is pretty much fully back to normal.
Good luck Rusty, and it doesn't matter if yer fat or fit, a hernia is natures way of saying "whoah there".
Time to slow down and start planning *how* yer gonna lift/move things.

He's a big unit is Rusty and he's knocking on a bit so yeah, Boomer I have to agree with you, he needs to slow down and start looking at his lifestyle.
