... weird how a lot of touring bikes nowadays only have small panniers and  no top boxes?

Like the Z1000SX? A fantastic machine, and may even be considered a sports-tourer, but it is definitely more sports than tourer, imho.

Swallow your pride, head to your local BMW dealer and book a test ride on an R1200RS.

I changed bikes for pretty much the exact same reason (excessive weight).

You'll end up with fewer gee-gees (125bhp), but also a lot less kgs (only 230kg compared to the GTR 300+kg - so power to weight is not much different). There isn't much in it in terms of torque, either.

You'll still have the shaft drive, but also heated grips, cruise control, adjustable suspension, and plenty of luggage options (BMW luggage is expensive - the SHAD mounts and luggage is neatest and best value).

It's a bike you could cross Europe on (I did, last summer) or go and play silly buggers with your mates on the twisties (which I do, regularly  :clap: )

All be it that was some time ago one imagines that you are very happy with the change in steed ?

Very happy indeed! A completely different animal to the GTR; lighter and more flickable, full of bells and whistles, but with enough grunt to put a big smile on my face. Plus I can still travel fast enough to face a ban or short spell at H.M. pleasure, should the mood take me :wink:
I do, on occasion, miss the raw, brutal, rush of the inline-4 as it fast approaches the 10k rpm mark, but it's time for me to slow down a little, methinks :grin:

A change of bike had been on my mind for a while, for various reasons.

Recent arrival of our first grand-child has made my wife look at life differently, so she won't be coming touring any more (plus she claims that looking at the back of my lid for 100's of miles isn't that great anyway), so that was one more reason to look at something different.

The real decider was me recently dropping the bike. OK, the crash bung saved the day, so no damage, and in my defence, I was parked on a slope, it was pouring with rain, and my my boot slipped as I rocked it off the centre stand. Anger and adrenaline fuelled me picking the bike up, but it was something I could have done without at 6am in the pouring rain, just before an hours ride to get a ferry.

Sure, the same thing may well have happened with a different bike, who knows. But a lighter bike would have been easier to pick up (and possibly stop falling?) and certainly easier to manoeuvre in and out of the garage at home.

So, test rode a Tiger Sport 1050. A fun bike, seemed very capable and free revving (hit the limiter quite a bit!). Bars a bit wide for my liking, chain drive (meh), but hideously expensive panniers/top box as extras.

Test rode an Aprilia Caponord 1200. Again, seemed capable, and again, bars were a bit wide, and again, chain drive. I couldn't get the cruise control to work, try as I might, and maybe it was just the particular bike I was riding, but it wasn't smooth at any constant rpm. "Horribly grumbly" is the only way I can describe it. The salesman claimed "all V-twins are like that" but I know that's BS. That bike had fuelling issues. So that put me off them.

Test rode an R1200RS. Note RS. Proper telescopic front forks. Oodles of torque. Shaft drive. Cruise control. Amazing suspension (tested on some very bumpy roads in the Fens...) Came back with a massive smile on my face, and did the deal there and then.

Because of work schedule, I can't pick it up until one evening next week, but I'm very much looking forward to it.

The pull of the dark side is indeed strong.

It beggars belief that anyone would ever drive away from such an incident, especially when there's a biker and bike on the road behind the rest of the carnage they caused...

Glad to hear you're not badly hurt. Pain in the :asshole: getting the bike fixed now :sad:

On the upside, you walked away from it relatively unscathed, which is great :yes:

Hope you and the bike mend soon.

I too have explored the dark side, in the form of a K1200S, when I was looking to get something with a bit more grunt than my CBF1000.

It was a great bike, pulled like a tank, very impressive... right up until I pulled back into the dealers yard and heard a very loud rattle that wasn't there when cold.

Mentioned it to the dealer. His reply "It's a clutch bearing. They all do that." and he pulled the clutch lever in (bike in neutral) and the noise vanished... In short, it put me off the bike as I figured it'd mean problems down the line.
